CASCADE LODGE

Recreation Therapy

Cascade Lodge’s Recreation Therapy program helps boys build confidence, reduce anxiety, and develop lasting life skills through meaningful experiences. While general recreation naturally boosts self-esteem and social connections, recreation therapy takes it further by setting personalized goals and guiding each student through structured activities designed for growth. Our therapists lead both interest-based clubs and evidence-based “sequences,” which culminate in powerful capstone experiences that challenge students and celebrate their progress. Each step encourages self-efficacy, the belief in one’s ability to succeed, shown by research to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Through outdoor adventure, leisure education, and therapeutic processing, your child will strengthen their physical, emotional, and mental well-being in a supportive environment.

The Benefit of Work & Play

Healing Through Adventure and Purpose

At Cascade Lodge, we believe that all forms of recreation can be therapeutic. General recreation naturally boosts self-esteem, strengthens social connections, and reduces anxiety even when activities are simply for enjoyment. Recreation therapy takes these benefits further by using recreation as a structured therapeutic intervention. Our licensed therapists assess each boy’s needs, set personalized goals, and guide them through activities designed to promote growth. Every experience is followed by thoughtful processing, helping boys translate skills learned in recreation into everyday life.

A Specialized Program for Boys

Individualized Care, Structured Growth

The Recreation Therapy program at Cascade Lodge is designed specifically for adolescent boys struggling with severe anxiety and related challenges. Students meet regularly with Recreation Therapists to ensure treatment is tailored to their individual needs. Our program combines year-round leisure education clubs with evidence-based therapy sequences structured 8-week interventions that build toward a powerful “capstone experience.” During these capstones, students apply their skills in new environments, face novel challenges, and celebrate their achievements. Each boy receives a medallion as a tangible reminder of his growth and accomplishments.

Building Confidence Through Self-Efficacy

From Small Wins to Lifelong Strength

A core focus of recreation therapy is self-efficacy, a student’s belief in his own abilities. Each therapy sequence highlights a therapeutic theme while helping boys build confidence through repeated success. Research shows that higher self-efficacy reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Outdoor and adventure-based activities, such as hiking or climbing, are especially effective in strengthening self-belief because they challenge boys in meaningful, memorable ways. At Cascade Lodge, these experiences become stepping stones toward lasting resilience.

Measuring Progress and Success

Evidence-Based Tools for Real Results

To track progress, Cascade Lodge uses the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), a clinically validated tool that measures growth in confidence and ability. Students complete this assessment monthly alongside other clinical evaluations. These regular check-ins help ensure that therapy remains effective, measurable, and focused on each boy’s personal development. Parents can feel confident knowing that progress is not only observed but also supported by research based data.

Overcoming Anxiety Through Exposure

Experiential Therapy that Rewires the Brain

Our Recreation Therapy program incorporates Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard treatment for anxiety and OCD. Boys are gradually exposed to activities that trigger anxiety, such as rock climbing for those with a fear of heights. With repeated exposure in a supportive setting, the brain begins to rewire, and the anxiety response diminishes. Over time, boys learn that they can face fears, manage stress, and succeed in challenges that once felt overwhelming.

Lasting Benefits of Recreation Therapy

Growth That Extends Beyond Treatment

Through Recreation Therapy at Cascade Lodge, boys gain tools to thrive physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Experiential learning is powerful. It reaches students on a deeper level than traditional methods alone. Whether through leisure education, outdoor adventure, or therapeutic processing, each boy is guided to step outside his comfort zone while surrounded by support. The result is greater confidence, stronger coping skills, and a renewed sense of purpose that will serve him long after treatment.
